Description

Step away from the textbook and dive into the mechanics of a modern global phenomenon. This curated academic field trip takes students directly to the Gwangju region to analyze the massive gap between internet mythology and historical reality. While the physical structure of Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital was demolished in 2018, the site serves as the ultimate case study for how digital media, CNN viral articles, and cinematic adaptations transform a mundane real estate failure into an international horror landmark.

🗺️ What You Will Do

Site Context & Geographical Survey: Travel to the restricted boundary lines in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province. Students will analyze the local landscape to understand how infrastructure changes (like sewage laws and dam constructions) actually shut the facility down in 1996.
Media vs. Reality Workshop: Participate in an interactive seminar contrasting real estate documents with the viral myths of "Room 402."
Found-Footage Film Analysis: Review key production segments of the 2018 blockbuster Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum on-site to analyze how set designers replicated the building's atmosphere to manipulate audience psychology.
Sociological Impact Interview: Speak with local residents or local historians regarding the negative economic and social impact that "dark tourism" and trespassing vloggers brought to their quiet community.
